Mariner Middle School Named Gold Star Winner for Innovation for Second Consecutive Year

For the second consecutive year, Mariner Middle School has been named a Gold Star Winner – the highest distinction – in the Star of Innovation Awards presented by the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP). The award honors schools across Minnesota for developing and supporting exemplary, innovative educational programs.

Mariner earned the top recognition this year for its school improvement efforts focused on ensuring that all students are on time to class. The Mariner team developed a schoolwide system focused on protecting learning time, strengthening a sense of belonging and improving school systems. Through these efforts, daily tardies were reduced significantly, resulting in increased instructional time, improved consistency across staff and stronger family partnerships. The work was accomplished without adding staff or implementing new systems. Most importantly, it put into action the school’s core belief that learning happens in the classroom.

“This work is about more than being on time to class – it’s about making every minute count for our students,” said Mariner Middle School Principal Christina Pierre. “By aligning our practices and focusing on what matters most, we’ve built a stronger sense of belonging and a shared commitment among staff, students and families to protect valuable learning time.”

The honor reflects a broader culture of innovation across the district. “This recognition speaks to the thoughtful, student-centered approach our Mariner team brings to continuous improvement,” said Superintendent Wayne Kazmierczak. “Their work demonstrates how meaningful change is driven by clarity of purpose, strong collaboration and an unwavering focus on student learning.”

In addition to the award, Mariner received a $250 check and will be formally recognized at the MASSP Summer Conference later this year.

During the 2024-25 school year, Mariner earned the top recognition for its “Building Circle” initiative, a school-wide decision-making model that invites all staff members to serve as collaborative partners in student-centered problem-solving.
